Fault (geology)

A fault is a planar fracture or discontinuity in a volume of rock across which there has been significant displacement due to rock-mass movements. Large faults within Earth's crust result from plate tectonic forces, with the largest forming plate boundaries, such as megathrust faults of subduction zones or transform faults. Energy release from rapid movement on active faults causes most earthquakes, though faults may also displace slowly via aseismic creep.

Faults are classified by dip angle and slip direction. Strike-slip faults have predominantly horizontal offset, with left-lateral (sinistral) or right-lateral (dextral) motion.
