A floodplain, also known as flood plain or bottomlands, is an area of land adjacent to a river, stretching from the river's banks to the base of the enclosing valley. It experiences flooding during periods of high discharge, with soils typically composed of clays, silts, sands, and gravels deposited during floods. Floodplains are significant because their regular flooding deposits nutrient-rich sediments, creating highly fertile soils that support agriculture and urban development, though this also entails a risk of inundation.

Most floodplains are formed by deposition on the inside of river meanders and by overbank flow. As a river meanders, flowing water erodes the outer bank while depositing sediments on the inner bank, building a point bar laterally into the channel. This lateral accretion creates a level floodplain composed mostly of point bar deposits. Overbank flow occurs when the river floods, depositing a thin veneer of sediments that is coarsest and thickest near the channel, a process called vertical accretion. Natural levees, crevasse splays, and wetlands form from these deposits, with levees being relatively well-drained ridges along river banks.
